Why Great Minds Never Stop Growing: Finding Joy in Continuous Self-Discovery
We explore why continuing to learn and grow is essential for reaching our full potential, despite others questioning why we don't stop when we're "good enough." The conversation examines how mastery in any field requires ongoing practice, study, and development—whether you're a doctor, athlete, or meditation practitioner.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Explaining to family members why we feel compelled to continue studying and developing ourselves
- Learning to know ourselves better and become artful in supporting others
- Challenging the misconception that education has an endpoint after formal schooling
- Recognizing that elite performers in any field constantly study, research, and practice
- Using the example of professional athletes who train relentlessly despite already being successful
- Finding joy in the process of growth as a compelling motivation for continued learning
- Embracing the idea that humans have an unending capacity to expand their capabilities

What you're suggesting is for us to just continue to keep doing the work and continue to go ever deeper. And it's just reminding me of a conversation I had with my mum recently when I told her I was doing the Vedic meditation teacher training going back to India this year, and she sort of looked at me as if like what do you? Why do you have to keep studying like you're? She said, which was really lovely. She said you know, you're beautiful the way you are. Why do you have to keep? Why do you have to keep doing this stuff?
Speaker 1:I don't understand and I get that, but and I sort of, my response was mum, like it's really hard to describe, but I just need to do this. Like just trust me on this one, but have you got something? Or a line? Or because probably many people around me might think what the hell is she doing? Like oh she's just constantly learning. Like what are you learning stuff for?
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, we're learning all of this stuff to know ourself better and to become artful in the way in which we can become a force of support for others to know themselves better. That's the simplest packet of how I describe it. And then you know a good, a good way of describing it. You know, the old school model is you go through high school, you go to university, you get a degree and then all of a sudden you're a doctor or you're a lawyer, and then, congratulations, now go out there and do it. Now go out there and do it.
Speaker 2:But any great doctor, lawyer, scientist, whatever a profession they are constantly studying, researching, learning, experimenting, exploring in order to advance their capability. We, as humans, have an unending capacity to grow in our capability and our knowingness and it's just a part of our nature to unfold that potential. And so you can just say very simply you know we never. I'm a student of life and I never stop learning and I know what I need to know. I know what I need to learn and thankfully I've identified where I can learn that. What I need to learn, and thankfully I've identified where I can learn that that's going to enable me to continue advancing in becoming more artful in what it is I want to do and how I want to be in the world.
Speaker 2:And you know, you say look, do you think that all the great scientists that discovered all the great things that they have discovered it just by doing one degree and sort of leaving it at that? No, they're in a perpetual state of probing, ever deeper, ever deeper, ever deeper, ever deeper In every profession. The people that are elite at what they do, it's like a professional athlete. They wake up. It's like you're. They wake up. It's like you're really good. Why do you need to keep training, you know? Why do you? You know, I've just taken up golf and I'm hearing about. You know what professional golfers do and it's, it's extraordinary. You know they'll pay. You know 18 holes of golf then go to the gym Like after 18 holes I'm cooked. Mind you, I've only just started.
Speaker 2:But, yeah, but you know they'll then go to the gym, have something to eat and then go back out and play another 18 or 36 holes. It's like, but you're really good, why can't you just go to the competitions? That's a silly question to ask a pro, right? It's like they're practicing. They're getting better and stronger and better and better and better through practice. You're already so kind of aware and awake. Why do you keep meditating? So that's how we need to frame it, that's how we need to frame it, that's how we need to frame everything. And it's so important that we, you know, embrace this idea of continual learning and exposing ourselves to things that challenge us, expand us, push us to, you know, become better at something, because we get immense joy out of it. I mean, that could be your simple answer to your mom. So it's because I just love it. It brings me joy.
